How Hitchin Forum Has Made a Difference
Church Memorial, Hitchin A Watchdog
We monitor development proposals and regularly lobby the County and District Councils on the suitability of proposed developments that affect Hitchin, from large development sites to small shopfronts, from road schemes to tree planting. We use the media effectively.

Town Promotion

  • we designed the Hitchin logo.
  • we produced the first 'Hitchin MiniGuide' and the 'Brief Guide to Historic Hitchin'.
  • we were involved in setting up the Hitchin Town Centre Initiative which employs the Town Centre Manager.
  • we co-ordinated the production of an information board at The Dell Open Air Theatre.
  • we helped the Town Centre Manager edit and reprint the 'Hitchin MiniGuide' and the 'Brief Guide to Historic Hitchin'.
  • we continue to support the Town Centre Manager in promoting Hitchin and campaign with other organisations to protect and improve Hitchin Museum and Hitchin Town Hall.
  • we have supported Hitchin Town Centre Initiative to prepare its application for Hitchin to be designated a Business Improvement District (BID).

Protecting our Environment
We have persuaded the Council for the need to protect and enhance Hitchin's green spaces, especially Butts Close, and The Dell where we have helped with practical improvements. We support residents’ groups fighting inappropriate development proposals like those West of Hitchin. We have played an active part in the Campaign Against Stevenage Expansion, and are working with local and national groups on issues to do with airport expansion and East of England regional housing requirements.

Working Together
We work with our member organisations on matters they raise of local concern. We mount anti-litter campaigns and work for better maintenance of street furniture etc.

Informing & Advising
Our bi-monthly Newsletter, which may be controversial, is a valuable source for news and views about issues affecting the town.
